The selection of the materials for marine uses is gaining interest because an increasing number of companies worldwide is starting to build up its establishments by the sea, in order to save transport cost and increase cooling capacity. Stainless steel is the ideal material for marine applications for its rust resistance.

Crevice corrosion and galvanic corrosion are some of the major problems in marine environment because of the low resistivity of the water, and most of this problems with stainless steel can be avoided by use of cathodic protection.
